Measure 105
Measure 105 would have repealed Oregon's Sanctuary State Law which protects undocumented immigrants from being required to show proof of documentation to police officials. Measure 105 would allow cops to question anyone at any time who appears “undocumented” for proof of legal residence a.k.a. "los papeles" and anyone that is unable to demonstrate evidence would be reported to ICE.
Without Oregon's Sanctuary Law, racial profiling by authorities, as seen in Arizona, could have began here in Oregon. People could have been stopped by police in the streets or outside of shopping centers and be asked to prove legal documentation. This possibility was alarming to many, especially to the Latino community because they are one of the most targeted community, especially by our current president, when it comes to “illegal immigration”.
Here in Oregon, the Latino community consists of about 13% of Oregon's population. Not all Latinos are undocumented or immigrants; 64% of Latinos in Oregon are US-born citizens. If Measure 105 would have passed, not only would it have struck fear amongst the 36% of undocumented Latinos, but 64% US-born Latinos would have not only fallen victim to racial profiling, but also have the notion of “you don’t belong here” be reinforced by those who are to serve and protect.
Measure 105 is not just. Although some Oregon residents feel that Oregon would be safer without undocumented immigrants, they fail to realize that crime rates among immigrants are not only low, but have been declining. The only threat that immigrants pose is in the minds of the people that voted, "Yes" on Measure 105.
I am glad that Measure 105 did not pass. Racial profiling among police officers would send a message that racial profiling is okay not only within the justice system, but within communities. The less immigrants fear public authorities, the safer Oregon will be.

Alexandria Ocasio-CortezFirst of all, she is my queen! I love her campaign, views, face, and simply everything about her. I shed tears of joy Tuesday night when her victory for congress was announced.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is the youngest women to be in congress (and she's of Cuban descent). Ocasio-Cortez is a Democratic Socialist and is known for advocating for progressive liberal ideals such as, expansion of Medicare, affordable housing, peace, guarantee federal jobs, gun control, criminal justice, etc. More Information about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez |
